jerudong, selirong island and proboscis monkey tour

My family will be travelling to Borneo in April, and we will be spending 2 days in Brunei. We might like to take our four-year-olds to the Jerudong theme park, but I am not sure what there still is there. Has anyone been there recently? If most of the rides are closed down, what else is there to do/see there?

Also, has anyone taken a trip to Selirong Island or a boat trip to see proboscis monkeys? If so, did you enjoy it and do you have any recommended tour operators?

Thanks,

Susan

regarding jerudont park, its still standing, but i m not sure how many of the rides are still left.

fortunately i found this site, and it shows how many rides are available at the moment (hopefully)

click the ';playground'; link on the top right corner

that aside ive never been to selirong island or seen proboscis monkeys, so i cant help u there, but if u fancy that sort of thing check out the ';belalong field centre'; in temburong, hopefully they still take on visitors.

personally ive never been there myself (lol) so ur going to have to do some research. As far as i know its in rough country, dense jungle, and temburong is seperated from the bruneian mainland by a piece of malaysia so u its going to be quite a journey if u decide to go.

good luck and hope this helps

Hi misha10

Though most of the bigger rides are no longer open in Jerudong Park, I%26#39;m sure your 4 year-olds would still enjoy a bit of the playground (definitely lots of space to run around to release their bundles of energy). The merry-go-round, paddle boats and some of the other rides for kiddies are still there. I%26#39;m sure the kids will appreciate the swings, slides and climbing poles as well. Go there in the late afternoon/early evening when the weather is nice and the breeze is starting to pick up. Bring along some packed food/snacks for a picnic as well.

You can also visit the Jerudong fish market (quite a scene for my kids anyway) and Jerudong beach which are 5 mins%26#39; drive away from the Jerudong theme park. If you are staying at The Empire Hotel nearby, then swimming and playing at the beautiful beach would be fun for the kids.

I have not been to Selirong Island or go on a boat trip to see the monkeys but I have heard that these are quite enjoyable. I believe there are also 1-day tours operated by local tour operators (e.g. Intrepid Tours, http://www.bruneibay.net/) to Temburong (and further on to the Temburong National Park). The trip from Bandar Seri Begawan (capital city) to Bangar (town in Temburong) would take about 30-40mins%26#39; river journey on the speedboats. Then it would be a short drive towards the Kuala Belalong area in Temburong where you can take another boatride up the river to the Temburong National Park. The boatride itself would be quite fun but I%26#39;m not so sure how the 4 year-olds would handle the climb up the many stairs if you%26#39;re planning on going up the Canopy Walk.

Sorry for the long reply but I hope it helps.

Hi Misha, we have recently returned from a week in Brunei ( see report under Bandet)- we don%26#39;t have children so can%26#39;t help you there. But if you are in BSB it is great just to take one of the many water taxis from the riverbank. They will take you to see the probocus monkeys which is a short ride in the boat (usually 30-60 mins). Doing it this way it would be less expensive than booking a tour of the mangroves through the travel agencies. The boatmen will sail up and down the riverbank and make a circular motion with their finger which means they will take you on a round trip - and will include the monkeys and the stilted village. Be sure you negotiate a price before you board! It%26#39;s great fun and the best times to see the monkeys are either early morning or late afternoon. It is also a fun trip to go to Temburong but I would not recommend the canopy walk for children as there are 1220 steps to the top and then many more up to the walkway.

We found the people to be very friendly and would also recommend the night food market in Gandong if you are near there. Enjoy!

Thanks for the help everyone. I would love to go to Temburong, but I think it might be too much for the kids. I am starting to get a picture of Jerudong now, and we might consider it, since we are staying the Empire and I gather they are pretty close. It sounds a bit sad, though, I have to say, with all the abandonded rides. I%26#39;m still intrigued about Selirong, although shortly after I wrote this question, I read that there was osme concern about venomous snakes on the island!

Thanks again,

Susan
