Driving from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu

Hi we are looking for adventure and it sounds like the trip from Brunei to Kota is what we want. To those who know could you please let me know where we can hire a 4wd in Bandar to go to Kota and if they let you drop them off in Kota as we plan to fly on from there? My email address is mikemizzi@hotmail.com if you want to answer direct rather then via this post. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks mike

Driving from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu

G%26#39;day Mike !

The short answer is a NO. However, all is not lost, might suggest you FERRY to Labuan Island, a trip of some 2 hours from Bandar. Labuan is a wealthy duty free Island off the Borneo Coast. It is home to a number of leading banks and oil companies. There%26#39;s a Sheraton and a lovely Yacht Club there as well a Lions and Rotary Club.

Labuan Island was rather important to Australia during WW2 as the landing spot for the eventual liberation of Borneo by the Allies from the then Japanese Imperial Army.

From Labuan you can ferry to Kota Kinabalu on a 6 hour trip. It%26#39;s a lovely coast line and a trip well worth taking. If you%26#39;re in Bandar or KK anytime from Mid December to mid January, please feel free to contact me via this forum.

  • Royal Brunei AL--Cancellations??

The direct flight from Brunei to SGN is only scheduled 3 days a week. Does anyone have any experience with this airline? I am worried about my flight getting cancelled and being stuck in Brunei for several days.

    Thanks.

    Jane

    Royal Brunei AL--Cancellations??

I%26#39;ve flown using Royal Brunei Airlines more than a dozen of times and have never experienced any cancelled flights.. Delayed flights (which are so seldom anyway) for a couple of hours, yes, I%26#39;ve heard of them, but never for a few days. So, yeah, I can safely say that their schedule%26#39;s reliable.

Besides, RBA is based in Brunei, so I would assume that if anything happened, they%26#39;d probably provide an alternative carrier.

Hope that the explanation%26#39;s reassuring for you.

    Royal Brunei AL--Cancellations??

I had forgotten about this being the base for the airline. You are right that an alternative should be provided if problems arise. That IS reassuring. Thanks, Zury.

Royal Brunei Air is getting progressively worse with its regular cancellations and long delays in recent times, as it has downgraded its fleet. We have had more problems with them than any other airline in the world, with delays and cancellations. Sometimes they combine two half-full flights, even if many hours apart. You will get to Singapore, but don%26#39;t bet on a tight time line. Fortunately, Singapore Airlines flies to Brunei most days - and with Air Asia flying to KL there is now another option too.

Thanks GWP for that additional information. I think I%26#39;ll fly Air Asia via KL even if I %26#39;ll need to spend the night in KL.

A day trip from Brunei ?

    Hello,

I will be in Brunei for one full day in mid-August.

Could anyone suggest a day trip where I might be able to walk in the jungle %26amp; see some wildlife?

I%26#39;m reasonably fit %26amp; an experienced bushwalker (in Australia ....)

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

A day trip from Brunei ?

    hi Linus,

I%26#39;d sugguest a full day trip to the Temburong National Park. It involves a 45minz boat ride from the capital, upon reaching Temburong-another car ride. Followed by a traditional long-boat ride upstream the river.

After which u can do some hiking up the canopy tower.

    Hope this Helpz

    need to know all

    need to know all

    hi there,

Speaking of family accommodation, what do u have in mind?

Id reckon anyone with budget to stay at the Empire Hotel. Resort style, beaches; ultimately the best place for a getaway n relaxing vacation. Its about 25minz car drive or so, away from town.

List of things u hafta see:

    #1 Water Village (Kampung Ayer)

#2 Jame Asri Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

#3 Royal Regalia building (Coronoation n Jubilee Chariot)

#4 National Park (Temburong - fullday)

The national park is worthwhile to visit if you have the time, as it requires a full day trip of taking ferry boat rides, traditional long-boat rides, n some hiking.

Hope this helps. Appreciate if others can fill in more list of things to do.

    need to know all

    Thank you for your information.

    hotel

You%26#39;ll enjoy staying in Brunei as the hotles is clean and the price is relatively reasonable. Hope you%26#39;ll enjoy your stay in Brunei early next year

    hotel

Few hotels around the town will be good enough for your stay in Brunei. All hotel here are absolutely clean and at a very reasonable price. Hope you%26#39;ll com ans enjoyed your stay here in Brunei

Excellent budget hotel if you want your money worth

excellent location, pleasant, clean and big room. great access to local amenities. We would not hesitate to recommend it and would love to stay there again. cant get any better for a budget stay.

Excellent budget hotel if you want your money worth

I%26#39;m sorry, but I can%26#39;t see the name of this hotel! Can you please advise?

    KH Soon Resthouse

I can%26#39;t find out how to book for this place or any extra info on it at all..can anyone help

    KH Soon Resthouse

    K H Soon Resthouse%26#39;s website is http://khsoon-resthouse.tripod.com/

I recommend that you email them via Email: khsoon_resthouse_brunei@hotmail.com or contact them via phone : +673 2222052

Its a nice and comfortable place to stay in and very convenient as it is situated smack in the middle of the city centre. About 5 mins walk from the Resthouse is the Bus and Taxi terminal. There%26#39;s the purple taxi that you can catch which charges only S$3.00(approx. US$1.80) for anywhere within a 3 km radius, after that, they%26#39;ll start the meter. You can check with the Resthouse in more detail about where to go and how.

    3 hours in BSB

I have a 3 hour layover in Bandar Seri Begawan, is there anything that can be seen in town in that time? How far is the airport from town? What options for transportation are there? Any insights on BSB and its airport/surrounding area will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    3 hours in BSB

with 3 hours in transit, you%26#39;ll get to see the airport....lol. bring a good book.

seriously, you can get a 72 hour visa for B$1. you need to pay for this in brunei or singapore dollars. the queue could be long and might take up to 1 hour. the airport is 8 km from the city. cab fare is around B$20 one way. best bet is to negotiate with the cab driver to take you around for 2 hours at a set rate. do not bother with a bus...it might never come! remember to factor in the check in time.

  • Stop over in Brunei

Hi, do you think that we would have time to catch a taxi and see some of the sights when we stop in Brunei for 7 hours. Is it safe and do you have any idea of how much it may cost to see the sights in a taxi. Thanks for your help

    Brunei Stopover

Hi we are spending four days in Brunei beginning of April 2006 hopefully staying at The Empire and would like any tips/ideas for must do trips etc. We like animals but would guess its too far to visit the Orang utans but what about probiscus monkeys?

Any ideas on what vaccinations are needed

    Brunei Stopover

I highly recommend you to take a tour to Ulu Temburong National Park. Suggested tour opeerators are Sunshine Borneo Tours and Freme Travel. Included in the tour is a 45 mins boat ride to Bangar, where there are high chances of spotting proboscis monkeys and crocodiles in their natural habitat (mangrove swamp). The canopy walkway available there may not be as long as those in Malaysia but provide significant view of the canopy, especially during early morning.

If you wish to visit the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, be reminded that taxis are rather scarce in Brunei. There is no railway in Brunei and the bus service is inefficient.

A visit to the water village (Venice of the East) is a must. I also recommend the Royal Regalia and the SOAS mosque, which both are located in the city centre.

Please be noted that nightlife does not exist in Brunei as Brunei is a rather strict Islamic country

    Brunei Stopover

The Empire Hotel and Country Club is a very good hotel but is quite far away from everything else. It is after all a resort.

Try The Centrepoint in Gadong as it is in the heart of one of Brunei%26#39;s busiest areas. Staying there, you will get to see many of the locals and their lifestyle.

    Cross over a tiny bridge to visit Gadong%26#39;s Night Market. Pick up a few phrases such as %26#39;Brapa ni?%26#39; pronounced %26#39;brupper knee%26#39; which means %26#39;How much is this?%26#39;. BND$1 = SGD$1. To say %26#39;thank you%26#39; in Brunei is %26#39;ma kasih%26#39; pronounced %26#39;ma ca-sea-h%26#39;

Perhaps the next day you could take a short taxi ride to the capital where you will see a more aged side of Brunei. There%26#39;s the Kampong Ayer, as previously suggested and the markets along the Brunei River. 10 mins away from the capital is the Brunei National Museum and Brunei Tenchnological Museum which is a good way to see Brunei%26#39;s culture.

Ask the previously suggested tour operators if they could take you to Tasek Merimbun (Merimbun Lake) in Tutong, about 30-40 mins away from The Empire Hotel or how about a bit of hiking at Bukit Shahbandar (Book-it Shah-bun-dar)?

Please be adventurous and try the local cuisines in restaurants such as Aneka Rasa or Mamih Restaurant in Qiulap (Key-you-lupp).

If your looking for local handicrafts I would suggest the small arcade shop (2nd level) found in The Mall at Gadong, a block away from Centrepoint Hotel. Its called Ridah Enterprise.

Hmm I tghink some of these posters mqy hav a biz here..I dont!I am an expat here.Do stay at the empire. They have a shuttle bus that can take you around for free, the hotel is amazing and over the top, well worth staying there. Its also near a bizarre fun park called Jerudong park. While many rides ar not open anymore, its an amazing place to visit. Its open after 5. Golf is cheap as chips, play either at the empire or the Jerudong park course, but early as it gets got.

Food here is good and you wont get sick.Escapade sushi in gadong is good and cheap,or try the popular for indian...or any other indian all good.Fratinis is an italian restarant in town which overlloks the river and village,go there for dinner before sunset.6 ish.You can see the monkeys and can book one of the boat men for around 50 to see the proboscis monkeys.Go in the morning is better when there is a low tide and you may see otters and gators too.

Bring beer and wine with you,for you own private consumption. The empire allow you to drink it at the hotel.2 wines and 2 doz beer.

you dont need any vacination at all.I have 2 kid here and we have never been sick apart from a cold.

Where to start? Where to go? What to do?!

I%26#39;m planning on taking 3 to 4 weeks off work for a trip to Brunei (to catch up with family there for about 5 days).

Am viewing this as an opportunity to explore further afield. Would like to experience the best of what that part of the world can offer (within that time frame anyway!) Also after a bit of rest of relaxation (on some deserted beach somewhere!) Not looking for super-luxururious places to stay - just soewhere comfortable and safe.m

Not sure if I should simply focus on visiting Malaysia or whether I should try to incorporate a visit to Thailand or anywhere else for that matter!

Would be REALLY grateful for any suggestions or recommendations!

Where to start? Where to go? What to do?!

    Warm Greetings from Brunei Darussalam!

    Hi,

If you are an active and adventurous person, you could try Jet Skiing in Serasa Beach. You could also visit Labi for that matter, The Iban Long House, and trekking to Wasai Wong Kadir in which a Cool Waterfall can be found. There you could have a family picnic and if you are lucky you could even stop for Hua Ho oranges picking on your way to labi. If you decided to take the above trip please call 6732234280 Freme Tour operators Mr sugu or you could email them at sugu@freme.com

Hoped you enjoy your trip to Brunei.

Where to start? Where to go? What to do?!

Well,I am an expat living here and I wouldnt reccomend any of those things!

I would do temburong canopy walk,a full day and you need to be fond of stairs! Its a ferry trip from town(7brunei) to temburong, then a bus to the park, then a skinny wooden boat trip up some gentle rapids...o not so gentle but very safe, then a walk through lovely national park...up lots of steps, until you get to the canopy walk....and walk through the tree tops. You need freme to orgainise the boat and bus.The ferry you can catch your self, day should cost you 45 if you orgainse 6 people.Otherswise it can cost 136!

You can also organise a water taxi in town to take you down the river(past sultans palace) to see the proboscis monkeys,go early at low tide if possible and then you may see otters and the odd croc too.Have lunch at portview italian restarnt after wards or coffee great view and nice.Jerudong park is worth a visit(5 b) opens at 5,a theme park .....pretty amazing, lots of rides dont work but enough do to make it worthwhile, and go to the laser water show, also in the park at 8,9 and 10.Worth the 5 just for that!!!Golf is cheap here and excellent.Best is the course in Jerudong park 25 for a round plus buggy.Gadong markets might be interesting for you...mixed market behind next to main mall. You could do a trip to Kota kinabulu and see the mountain there, great snorkelling there and diving at islands 10 mins from most main hotels.I would reccomend Sutra harbour hotel..view pools(old part is cheaper and I like it better but you may like the newer part of the hotel as has asian rooms.)Worth a visit to see the mosques and deff walk around the water village or catch a water taxi(10) for a trip around it.Have a t least one meal at the Empire Hotel...do the lunch in the atrium(33) ot pantai grill fri and Sat (44)If you do the lunch get there early before';greedy'; people!!!

Jerudong pantai markets(fish and veges) very local but fascinating get there at 5.All sorts of amazing fish.............and fruit...............even saw a croc there once for sale!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope that helps!!!!Trust me these are all GREAT tips.

    Thanks

    12 hr Stop Over

    Warm Greetings From Bruneian Care!!

    Hi,

For a 12 Hour stop in Brunei Darussalam you could fill in your time with the following activities:

1). Sightseeing in BSB around Water Village/Jame Asr%26#39; Mosque

    2). Shopping at Gadong Town

If you%26#39;re not up to sightseeing, you could always go to Brunei shopping mall in Gadong, or Qlap area. Since, Brunei are tax free you could find electrical stuff and food very cheap. However, since you only have 12 hours stop renting a car could be expensive and wasting. Try to contact a taxi from the airport and make early arrangements so you could go places to fill in your time here.

Hoped you have an enjoyable time in Brunei.

    12 hr Stop Over

The following places are worth visiting during your stay in Brunei:-

Brunei Museum, Arts %26amp; Handicraft Centre, Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, take a boat ride at Water Village, - viewing of the lifestyle of inhabitants of Water Village and the world%26#39;s largest residential palace (rear view only) along the way, walking on the planks and tasting of local delicacies in the house of the Boat Owner, Royal Regalia, Jame Asr Mosque, Jerudong Beach (facing South China Sea) that gives you ';tranquility';, The Empire Hotel %26amp; Country Club (one of the best hotels in South East Asia) facing South China Sea, etc.

Another option - the eco tour - if you are a nature lover.

More information can be obtained from the service counter outside the arrival hall of the airport.

    High medal

I stayed at the Brunei Hotel for two nights last March.

It is a 3 star hotel and overall I was not impressed.

I suppose it mets 3 star requirements but the restaurant is not very good, food is average including breakfast.. The room I had was average with little but the basics provided. But It was cheap. I suppose you get what you pay for.

I felt that the staff were not very helpful and their command of english was not great.

However, it is very central and handy to most of the facilities, markets and shopping in Bandar Seri Begawan. There are a couple of reasonable coffee shops and cafes one block away.

If I went back to Brunei, which is doubtful, I think I would find a better place to stay.

4 day 3 night stopover in Brunei with 8 year old. What to...

    hi,

I have a 3 night 4 day stopover in Brunei with my 8 year old daughter in july on our way home from UK to Australia. I want her to see some of the culture and the different way of life as well as maybe some monkeys or orangutans etc. We are also interested in the Jerudong theme park. Can anyone clue me in on good places to stay and activities to do. We are quite adventurous but obviously safety is still important with a child. I want it to be a great sensory experience for her.

4 day 3 night stopover in Brunei with 8 year old. What to...

    hi,

I would suggest the following things to do:

    1) visit the Kampong Ayer. It%26#39;s a mere half day trip

    2) stay at the Empire Hotel, if you can afford it (suggested for honeymoon couple). The hotel is near to the Jerudong Theme Park but is rather far from the capital.

3)visit the Ulu Temburong National Park (Not recommended for children below 12). Tours can be arranged. Exhilarating!

4)visit the two mosques : Omar Ali Saifudin Mosque and Jame Asr Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque.

5)if you are free, the Royal Regalia and the Brunei Museum is worth a visit, but the children would be bored.

6)if you are in Brunei in the 23rd February or 15th July, you would be lucky to witness the celebration in the city centre. July 15th is more interesting. There will be neons all over the capital.

    23rd Feb - National Day

4 day 3 night stopover in Brunei with 8 year old. What to...

    Hi..

you could start of going to ulu temburong for a day return if you want to see some monkeys you could spot some prosbiscis monkey on the way to temburong. you could also experience some great views from the canopy bridge.

Culture of Brunei is very unique in its way. You could take a taxiride to the water village, and spend the rest of your evenings at Jerudong theme park which are open on wednesday to friday between 5pm to 12am (For Rides). You could make queries on the local tour operator, Freme and sunshine tour travel.

Brunei has many accommodation based from budget to 6 star rating depending on location. But, my suggestion is The Centrepoint Hotel, Gadong.

Crime rate in Brunei is very minimal but we do advise you to take extra precaution whenever you travel. Good Luck and Enjoy your visit to Brunei darussalam.

Hi I am an aussie living in Brunei.

Temburong should be fine if your 8 year old can handle the humidity and steps and steps...I would stay at the Empir its FAB!!!!!Jerudong park is a must for her,and the horse riding place will be open by then too..5 mins from empire. They have a shuttle bus to take you around where ever. This is a very safe place. The usual still aplies, zip your bag up and done leave your mobile lying around...even then I have hear of very very few thefts. The locals here are SO NICE.Its the best asset of Brunei. If you stay at the empire go doawn to Jerudong pantai markets, fresh local fruit and veges, smolked fish and fresh fish of EVERY variety.Go at 5.

If i am around in July(have to check hols here)I could meet up with you..miss australians! Please feel free to ask any other questions.

How about Ulu Temburong National Park with a 4 year old? We live in a large city and therefore do a lot of walking. Our girl can walk all day in town, and she likes the woods. I%26#39;m looking on the web at www.exploreborneo.com and they talk about a 2 hour walk. Is up a lot of steps or steep hills or something, or do you think she could do it?

Also, is Belalong National Park the same thing? If they are different places, is one better than the other? Are there any others?

We will later be staying in Kota Kinabalu and might visit Kinabalu Park. Does anyone think we need to do both, or do they recommend any over the other?

We are looking for day trips only, no overnighters. Thanks.

No way can your 4 year old manage temburong!I think from memory there is 1200 steps.....up.Dont forget its as humid as anything!

1200 steps. OK, that%26#39;s a good cold hard fact. You%26#39;re right, Breadnut, not a good idea for our child. Thanks.

    Muara Tour Guide?

We are a group of ~16 that will be in Brunei for a day next February -- am looking for suggestions on tour guides and activities to do in and around Muara. Thanks!!

    Muara Tour Guide?

Ha ha ha! you want to tour my little village at Muara? If you want to get away from the tourist path, this is it. Brunei does not have a tourism industry, so no tour guides at all. Except for beaches there is nothing to see at Muara. Go to Bandar instead.

Best way from Bandar Seri Begawan to Mulu

    Hi there,

I have a stop over in Brunei and would like to stay a while and see some of the sites, and would also like to visit the Mulu caves..

Can anyone tell me the easiest way to get to Mulu Resort from Bandar Seri Begawan.

    Thank you

    Sue

Best way from Bandar Seri Begawan to Mulu

    Dear Bakpaker

A number of places of interests in Brunei definitely worth visiting. For instance; Malay Technology Centre, Museum, Royal Regalia, Istana Nurul Imam (the world biggest residential palace), Water Village (Venice of the East), Magnificent Mosques, etc.

The easiest way to Mulu Resort is by land - around 3.5 to 4.5 hours - depending on the traffice flow on the road.

For further information, you can always refer to the booths outside the Arrival Hall of Brunei International Airport. They are able to provide information required.

We look forward to welcome you to Borneo!!

Best way from Bandar Seri Begawan to Mulu

Thank you for your advice on how to get to Mulu from Brunei, would you know roughly how much it would cost by mini van for 6 people to travel this route.

I am very interested in seeing some of Brunei, and the Palace is first on my list.

I have been to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching in Borneo so I am very excited to be coming to Brunei.

    Thanks again for your advice

    shopping in brunei

This is my first trip advisor posting so hope this is correct - we will be overnighting in Brunei en-route to Kota Kinabalu and wondered if there is any special shopping to be done there - always on the lookout for special mementos of a visit to different countries - or is there anything that is especially well priced in Brunei - many thanks

    shopping in brunei

I had two nights in Brunei in early March and because my suitcase went astray I had the joy of having to do some shopping.

Prices are not much different to Australia and there was not anything very different. The main shopping centre in Bandar Seri Begawan is just like any mall in Aust. Other shopping is not much different.

Spend your money on a half day city tour, book at the Airport on arrival, for some ';interesting experiences';. Save your shopping money for Kota Kinabalu where there is a much wider choice and better prices.

If you want a drink in Brunei don%26#39;t forget to take it with you, it is dry country. You have to fill out forms on entry and declare any alcohol. Don%26#39;t forget to have $15 Brunei or Singapore (I think that is the amount) to pay for your transit visa at the Airport on arrival. I didn%26#39;t have it and had to run around changing currency before they would let me in.

You are able to get the local made sourvenir from The Arts %26amp; Handicraft Centre, Crystal factory, souvenir and weaving shop.

More information can be obtained at the service counter outside the airport arrival hall.

    Enjoy your stay in Brunei.

Have to disagree with Big w.There are many bargains to be had here.Copy dvds and watches to name a few and copy handbags.Just ask locals which shops to go to they are all helpful, and most speak english, but may be a little shy.Scarfs too abound and they make a great light gift.Shoes are to die for and very cheap too...as long as you have small feet.Clothes are only soso and tend to be cheap and very poorly made.Only buy dvd 9 quality dvds and get the shop to play it all the way thru on fast forward...many are scratched and damaged.

    Eating out is good.Good luck.

From what I know things are cheap in Brunei unless you don%26#39;t know where to buy it. There is a night eatery in Bandar next to a blue church. The cost of food in that area is BND30 for 8 people. for the same amount of food will cost me RM200 in Kg Baru Kuala Lumpur. As I have said. Things are cheap in Brunei only if you know where to find them.

Recommended hotels are Centrepoint hotel BND138 for a suite, Empire hotel (only for the rich) and D%26#39;anggerik for a cheap 4 star hotel BND72 per night.

hehehe... if u leave here in the phils... you will find it expensive.. most goods in brunei are also made in china.. like here in the phils... triple the price here in the phils.... but its good to go around... you might find big discounts or items on big sale...

Hi,i have a few questions about Brunei and would appreciate if anyone can help me;stopping there in september for 2 days;is there a beach where we can have a swim,is it true that taxi are very expensive from jerudong park?Thanks......John

The only hotel that fronting the sea is the Empire hotel. As for beaches, the more popular one would have to be Muara Beach and Serasa Beach. Do note that these two beaches tend to be filled with locals. There is actually a bus service going to those two beaches.

You could search at www.anthonytours.com. The hotels are cheaper ...maybe because tourism is at its learning stage. You can get a 4 star hotel at a mere SGD 72 per night. .I sugggest you try centrepoint hotel. BND138 for a spacious rooom. This kind of room will cost me RM800 to RM1K in Kuala Lumpur. The location is excellent .walking distance to shopping mall in the area

I wish you good luck on your journey

Need a trourist guide to guide my family around Brunei.

Hello Salmahismail. I think Brunei is quite a good place for family vacation. The only downside is the inefficient taxi system. I suppose there%26#39;s probably a taxi service that you can call. What I am saying is, if you expect a taxi waiting at the taxi stand, that%26#39;s not happening (esp in the evening). So arm yourself with a taxi phone number. There is a few good tourist agents in Brunei such as Freme (www.freme.com), sunshine tour (www.exploreborneo.com), Anthony Tours (www.anthonytours.com) and Southern Cross (www.onebrunei.com). The cheaper option is ofcourse to do it yourself (unless to the more remote location such as Jerudong Playground, Ulu Temburong National Park and the Proboscis Monkey tour). The rest are all located in Bandar or in a close vicinity. A must see place would have to be the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Jame Asr Mosque, the watervillage (do take the boat ride - rate negotiable), the Royal Regalia, the Brunei Museum, The Malay Technology Museum and the Istana Nurul Iman. For textile shopping, I would recommend you to drop by at Serusop shopping area (shop name such as Nazmi).

    Labi Longhouse & Waterfall tour?

hi i was going to brunei with friends in late october and i was thinking of taking these 2 tours from royal brunei air web site, please tell me how they are and if anyone has tried them?

    1-Labi Longhouse %26amp; Waterfall tour

2Ulu Temburong National Park - Day Tours or night stay over

    thanks guys

    Labi Longhouse %26amp; Waterfall tour?

I have tried the Ulu Temburong tour. Highly recommended. I only tried the day tour though but my friends keep on recommending me to take the overnite tour. I guess the overnite tour is also a worth to go. It%26#39;s a completely different experience. The forest there is still unspoilt and very beautiful. I think right from the begining of the tour (the boat ride to Bangar) it felt like being transported to a different time / area. There is a long house in Temburong. You might want to combine that together rather than going to both Ulu Temburong and Labi longhouse. But then again, I have not been to Labi Longhouse.

cost of car rentals in BSB.

I am spending about 5 days in BSB and thought I would rent a car. Can anyone advise what side of the road you drive on and approx. the cost of a small car per day.

cost of car rentals in BSB.

    Thanks a lot Eyien,

You have answered my queries. Not coming until September so will find you then.

    Regards Medal.

cost of car rentals in BSB.

The cost of car rentals in BSB will range between B$60 - B$100 per day. depends on which car rentals you use. The famous car rentals in Brunei is Hertz tel: 6732390300/10, Qawi enterprise tel: 6732 2340380/81, and Avis tel: 6732 426345. But i recommend u to use Qawi enterprise.

    Enjoy your trip to Brunei!

    Bruneiancare,

Thanks a lot for your reply. Have 2 hours stop over on way to Singapore so will check out the Qawi car rental.

If you are at the Empire, they have a shuttle bus and you wont need a car.Where are you staying?

    Thanks beadnut,

I have emailed the KH Soon resthouse and reserved a room there. I have been guided there by other comments from this forum.

I stayed at the Brunei Hotel, opposite the KH SOON Resthouse about 4 weeks ago. I did not see inside the resthouse but if the outside is any reflection on the inside I would say be very careful.

If you want to email me at eugenew@westnet.com.au I wiil send you an external photo of the rest house taken from my room window at the Brunei Hotel

    medal

Did you check out the KH Soon resthouse?

    If you did, comments please.

    K.H.Soon RestHouse

I%26#39;ve just returned from Brunei and stayed at the K.H.Soon RestHouse. Great location though but I would recommend staying near Gadong so traveling after 6pm would not be a problem. Buses are very convenient for traveling around the city and cheap but they stop service at 6pm. Caps are very expensive.

K.H.Soon RestHouse is the worst accommodation I%26#39;ve ever experienced. Very disappointed because the rooms are not even clean which is the most important thing for a budgeted accommodation. Room and bedsheet smelled and humid, water leaked from the toilet to the room...Chinese prostitutes staying in the resthouse which is the most disgusting thing for me.

I will not recommend anybody to stay there.

    K.H.Soon RestHouse

Glad to see a post from someone who has actually stayed at KHSoon.

I stayed at the Brunei Hotel opposite in March and was very suspicious of the KHSoon web site and hotel reports on TA after seeing the place from the outside. This posting confirms my suspicions. PS both give it a 4*rating!!!!

    Thanks CaRolCaFe

I am looking to book the Empire Hotel in March 07. Everywhere I have read said don%26#39;t pay the full rates as there is always discounts available. Does anyone have any suggestions as who to book with. I am not one of those people to wait until I get to the destination to orgainse a hotel so I will have to pre book.

  • lone traveller/where to visit and feel safe?

    Hello

I plan to spend a short time in brunei. Im travelling alone and am female. if you have spent time there alone, did you feel safe? what would you recommend? i dont have a lot of money either so i cant go on expensive tours.

    thank you!

lone traveller/where to visit and feel safe?

The best time to travel to Brunei is during the festive time, such as the Sultan%26#39;s birthday. There is a one month long celebration for that. Will have to check www.bruneitourism.com for activities. Yes, Brunei is safe for female traveller. There is a few budget accommodation here, such as KH Soon Services %26amp; Resthouse (khsoon_resthouse_brunei@hotmail.com), Jubilee Hotel (jubilee@brunet.bn) and Capital hotel. Some of the major attraction in Brunei (and free) are the Jame Asr Mosque (built afew years ago to commemorate the 25th anniversary of HM%26#39;s reign), Omar Ali Saifuddien mosque (built in 1968, one of the most impressive mosque in Southeast Asia), water village (houses on stilt. Recommend you to take the boat ride to go around. Rate negotiable but should not cost more than B$20 for a roundtrip), Royal Regalia (a good historical background of the royal tradition), the Brunei Museum and The Malay Technology Museum. All these are accessible by bus, which cost something like B$1 per ride. The fee-paying that maybe worth to go is the Proboscis monkey tour (about 3 hour) and Ulu Temburong National Park (one day trip). I think the Ulu Temburong cost around B$150 per person. For a real local experience, do try to savour some of the food at Gadong market foodstall (only available from 6 pm onwards and food cost as cheap as B$1 per pack). There is also a weekend bazaar in Bandar starting from Sat 6 pm to Sunday evening.

lone traveller/where to visit and feel safe?

If you are reading the reports on KH Soon resthouse and its web site I suggest you read it very carefully. Have a look at the dates of the posts, the language in them (I suspect the posts and the web site are by the same person), the room rates and remember that in UK and eleswhere it would be described as a backpackers. I have seen this building from the outside, not been inside and I would be very suspicious of the 4 Star rating.

I have just returned from a four day solo visit to Brunei (in July 2006), during which I spent several hours walking around Bandar Seri Begawan alone by day and by night. I am not female, but I can assure you that, from a crime and personal safety point of view, this is probably one of the safest places on the planet. (A consequence, I suspect, of a generally wealthy population, an authoritarian state, and the fairly strict application of Shariah law to the country%26#39;s Muslim residents.) As long as you don%26#39;t say anything critical of the Sultan, I would imagine that you would be a lot safer than you are in Leicestershire or most other places in the UK, Europe or North America.

According to statistics and anecdotal evidence, this country is virtually crime free. A small indication of this was the fact that, during my stay, the local newspaper gave fairly prominent coverage to the arrest of two people who had been caught stealing cell phones. There are not too many places where this would make news.

Tours are available, but they are quite expensive. If you don%26#39;t want to take tours, I would recommend that you stay in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan rather than on the outskirts of town, since taxis are expensive.

I suggest a visit to the Royal Regalia Museum, which is a lot more interesting than its name suggests. Although not intended as such, it is a monument to the excesses of Brunei%26#39;s sultan. (Indeed, much of the country is a monument to the excesses of the Sultan and his family.) Also take a walk around the Omar Saifuddien Mosque, and be sure to walk around the back as well as the front. There you will see a part of the water village that isn%26#39;t visible from the river, a scene that makes it clear that not everyone in this country is wealthy. A relatively cheap way of seeing the sights from the river is by taking a water taxi. You would need to take a regular taxi to the Brunei Museum, and it isn%26#39;t worth it (unless you want to see a dated exhibit on the oil industry sponsored by Shell, or an exhibit of the Sultan%26#39;s Islamic Art)

Another recommendation: Take an early morning walk to the open air market, opposite the Brunei Hotel. This is a primarily a food market, and you will see spices, fish (live, dead, and dried), fruit, and vegetables for sale. You won%26#39;t find anything tourist oriented here, or in most other parts of the country, since tourists are still a relative rarity here. But the market is interesting to see, and great to photograph.

Have a look at CaRolCaFe%26#39;s posting on K H Soon Resthouse.

As I said earlier take care.

Thanks bigw. Travelling in Brunei alone is safe even for a female dressing ';unappropriately'; --%26gt; it was tooooo hot for me to ';dress up';. Showing the shoulders and the knees would not be strangely-obsevered. All big mosques listed in the guide or the city map as major attractions are equipped with long robes but please also bring a scarf along with you so you can also cover your hair when you%26#39;re visiting the mosques.

As bigw mentioned before I%26#39;ve just returned from Brunei (21 - 23 August) and actually stayed at the KH Soon Resthouse. The rooms are spacious but smelly and dirty, big cocroaches can be easily found on the corridor/walkway. Every time I had a shower the washroom flooded with water leaked out to the bedroom.

There were ';prostitute-like'; women sitting around the front desk every evening. That really made me sick!!! I paid B$39 per room per night and I regreted not paying a double for a decent clean room in Jubilee or Capital...sigh...

    Good luck and enjoy.

I live here and am an aussie. This place is as safe as houses!!!Dont worry about covering up,but dont wear a mini or anything too obviously revealing.A t-shirt and 3/4 pants are fine,or skirt. You dont need a scarf,if you visit a mosque they have a robe for you to put on.

In 3 years i have heard of a mobile phone stolen and a wallet. But these people were being careless.Use common sense! They are so honest here they count your change usually 3 times!!!!But there are some very poor indian, and phillipino workers here...so not everyone is well off.

I spend time here on my own and have never felt safer. The people here are just delightful, and very laid back about the Muslim religion.

They understand that western ways and dress is different. They are a wonderful example of a religion that has been much maligned.

Eating out is FAB!!! here.Lots to try.If you have any more to ask...feel free.Do a water taxi ride about 10 dollars in the city around the water village.Go and visit the mosque in town(free) eat anywhere..they are very very clean, even grubby looking places!Take toilet paper(they dont tend to use it)..they shower instead!Do a boat trip(city) on low tide to see probiscis monkeys, about 50 dollars..brueni money.Golf is cheap and excellent if you want a game.Gadong markets near the fish markets....free from about 6 onwards.Bring lots of changes of clothes...you will sweat as its very very humid.Hope this helps.Ahhh Jerudong fish market is nice,on the beach, well opposite from 5 onwards, local fish market and fruits..interesting.All very very safe.English is spoken by nearly everyone.

    transit

Transit visa is BND5. You can use BND or Singapore dollars. You can exchange $A at the airport. There is also an ATM at the airport.

In March I arranged a tour 1/2 day city and sights tour at the airport. Counter on the left as you exit the terminal building.

    Hi there,

Just got back from Kota Kinabalu myself. Had over 12 hours lay over in Brunei. My advice, get yourself some Brunei or Singapore dollars from Perth. You%26#39;ll need it for entry visa @ $5 a pop (if you decide to get out of the airport) Brunei Airlines has a deal with Brunei Hotel for a day use for AUD 66.00 including airport transfers - good value. Brunei Hotel is smack bang in the middle of town (bonus). There%26#39;s a market across the river 2 mins walk from the hotel. Eating places (Pizza Hut, Jollibee, can%26#39;t find mackers...) within walking distance. A short stroll (in the evening) towards the mosque is a must - the mosque is quite a sight when lit. after dinner and sight seeing, should be just in time for your transfer tot the airport.... I%26#39;ll put my money on Sabah tho... lot%26#39;s more to do and see... good luck mate...

Hi I am an aussie living in Brunei, let me know what time you arrive, and who you are flying with...RBA can be late, and I will think about what you can do ,and get back to you.I would happilly drive you around but 6 adults is too many lol!!!Also what you like to shop for,buy etc.It could be a good shopping destination.I seem to remember you cant get singapore dollars in Oz when I came.Actually it might have been Brunei dollars.I think it was.Singapore dollRS ARE THE SAME AS b dollars here...oops caps lock. But its hard to swap B dollars back.Get singapore dollars.

My daughter and I will be arriving tomorrow morning in transit to Thailand, and will have a day to kill.

Were wondering what there is to see and do in the city (apart from the Mosque - which we wil definitely have a look at) and if there are any places of interest not far from town that we can catch a bus to.

    All suggestions welcome

My son and I got back last night. We booked a city tour at the airport. Walk out of the terminal and on the left near the hire cars. We did city and water village tour then went shopping at Gadong. The shoppind better in Sabah. Get singapore dollars $5 for tsansit visa but be careful cos you get the change in Brunei dollars so have to spend the change in Brunei. 6 adults should have no probs getting tour and guide we had was very knowledgable with interesting facts and figures about the country and the sultan.

    Borneo local tours

    Hi,

We are planning a stop-over in Borneo in Feb 2007 on our way north (we live in Oz).

Has anyone booked a tour locally (not from outside Borneo) to see OrangUtans? Or better still, could anyone advise us how to stay at one of the reservations/refuges?

Booking these tours from outside Borne may be the same waste of time as booking tours for Thailand outside that country? Not sure about Borneo, but we did the latter in Chang Mai and it was half the price of Australia - and was excellent - although initially they tried to rip us off (unsuccessfully).

Please write only if you have personal experience.

    Borneo local tours

    Hi weltentrotter welcome to TA

Are you stopping over in Brunei or Sabah and for how long?

As far as I know the two orang sanctuaries are both in Sabah at Sepilok (near Sandakan) and Rasa Ria (near Kota Kinabalu aka KK).

Tours to both are very popular and getting to Sandakan requires booking a return flight from Kota Kinabalu. You would need to do this several days in advance, preferably thru a local tour company such as wildlife expeditions http://www.wildlife-expeditions.com/

The other sanctuary is at the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort and this can be booked from any hotel in KK. It is about a 45 minute coach trip to RR from KK

If you are stopping over in Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei) you would have to fly to KK then onwards as above.

I also suggest you post you questions on the Malaysia/Sabah/Kota Kinabalu forum if you are stopping over in Sabah.

If you search this forum you will find lots of detail on orang tours.

    Borneo local tours

You are right it is cheaper to book locally but the flights to Sandakan for Sepilok have to be booked about a week in advance and the Rasa Ria has to be booked at least 3 days in advance, although we showed up without booking and got in. we used2 tour companies while in Borneo and I would recomend either.

    www.nature-heritage.com

    www.discoverytours.com.my

I like to thank you both for your prompt replies. (Have posted a thank-you earlier, but it has not appeared.)

Thanks, bigw for the suggestion to post in the Malaysia forum - will do.

To answer your question, we would like to stay for about 2 weeks...

Maybe we visit Brunei, but basically it will be Sabah.

I actually thought we would go to Brunei, but Malaysian Airline seems to be the choice, to go to Sabah direct.

    Thanks again!

Hi I just posted a detailed reply on the Sabah forum an just saw this.

    Thanks for your reply.

I don%26#39;t think Malaysia airlines fly direct to Sabah. You have to go thru Kuala Lumpar or Singapore.

In march I am flying Sydney to Singapore and return with QANTAS using frequent flyer points, and Singapore to KK with Malaysia who have a very cheap fare booked over the net (SD 376 return).

    Just back and loved it

Just back from a trip to Sabah. Stopped at Brunei on the way home and I have to say I am glad we did. I found Brunei a beautiful city with alot to offer. We used the public bus sytem to go everywhere, at one Brunei dollar it is a bargain. Visited the water village and the Probiscus Monkeys, this cost us 40 Brunei dollars for about 3 hours for 4 of us. We stayed at the Rizqun, just beautiful and the staff wonderful, linked to the shopping mall wich is open from 10am to 10pm. No tax in Brunei so no extra to pay at the hotel resturant. We flew with Royal Brunei for the first time and we were all very happy with the aircraft and the service on board. I look forward to going back again only this time for a little longer.

Ideas for long transfer wait in Brunei

    Hi there,

On September 17th we have a long stopover in Brunei airport while we are travelling from Dubai through to Kota Kinabalu (arrive 10am, need to be back at the airport at 3pm to check in again).

We have 2 very young children with us - can anyone recommend an easy trip outside of the hotel, a short taxi ride away, like an air-conditioned shopping mall for example. Am looking for somewhere easy to go with the kids for a few hours (perhaps with a fast food restaurant that is open during Ramadan).

We%26#39;ve been to the Empire hotel before and done a brief city tour so don%26#39;t need to do this again.

    Any advice is appreciated

Ideas for long transfer wait in Brunei

Hi Paul. Given that you%26#39;ve down a city tour before, I would suggest with the young kids you just get a taxi to the Gadong Shopping Mall. Less than 10 mins from the airport. This is the largest and newest mall in Brunei. It is surrounded by strip shops and several smaller malls. It is great for kids, as there is a movie cinema in the complex. It is air conditioned. There is a McDonalds and Pizza Hut just outside, as well as a Svensons and food court near the cinema. The only decent coffee in Brunei is also at the Coffee Bean cafe in the foyer of the adjoining Centrepoint Hotel...and these outlets cater for expats and Westerners not bound by Ramadam eating restrictions! Also it is easy to find at cab at Centrepoint to get you back to the airport easily.

    Borneo Stopover?

Next December, my family and I are going to Saigon to a couple days for business. However, we are considering spending about two week in other places. We have traveled extensively throughout Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Peninsular Malaysia, and Singapore. We were wondering if anybody else has had some enjoyable stopovers around Asia that would be fun to tie in. Anywhere is the Asian Vicinity would be nice. Would Borneo provide a fun, safe trip for our adventurous family?

Help with itinerary for a short visit

hi, my flight will arrive in Brunei at 1835 and leave the next day at 12pm. Could someone pls help me re-arrange my itinerary so i can see all the places below in the most logical way. I%26#39;m staying at the Orchid Garden and not too sure how far is it from the hotel to the town centre. Is it easy to catch bus/train to town?

    Jame%26#39;Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

    Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

    Istana Nurul Iman

    Royal Regalia Museum

    Yayasan complex

    Kampong Ayer - Venice of East';

What must see first in brunei? I would like to take night time photos at these amazing architectures and perhaps do the shopping and Kampong Ayer in the morning.

Are you allowed to go inside the palace during day time? If entry is allowed, i can visit the palace in the morning.

I will have to come back to Brunei on my way back so if I miss one or two places this time, I can come back next time.

    Thanks for your help

Help with itinerary for a short visit

No need to tell you your time is too short.Get a taxi driver to give you a tour of the city at night and stop off to take photos of Mosques as they look best at night all lit up.Do the water village and river trip tour next morning 1-2 Hr and skip the rest. You can only see inside Royal Palace a couple of times a year.

you will have no trouble seeing everything you have listed in one day. Try getting in touch with My Nature Kingdom via this forum for tour guide. Don%26#39;t think you can go inside the Istana outside of Hari Raya but can definitely photograph it from the outside although vegetation rather restricts your view these days!

    hi Cict,

There are purple buses running along the main roads outside the hotel, probably 15-20mins walk. Buses are not punctual, they do not have an accurate time schedule or a proper bus stand. But if u could catch one, i only cost BND$1 per ride. Look out for purple bus. It takes u right to Bandar Seri Begawan. Taxis are way 2 expensive. There are no trains in Brunei

For ur info, these are the opening times n day for the mosque.

    Open: 9am-11.30am, 2-3pm, 5pm-6pm

    Close: Thursdays

    *Fridays* open from 5pm-6pm only.

Hope this help, feel free to drop me a line if u have any other info that u need in Brunei.

    Miri to Brunei

Did this trip last Feb,public bus runs from bus station in Miri (buy ticket at kiosk)it involves 3 buses and a 50 yard river crossing,if memory serves me correctly takes about 4/5 hrs to Capitol and stops en route, cant recall price but not expensive, didnt return to Miri but I would think it must do the return hope this helps.

Can anyone confirm there is an atm in the ferry terminal

    Thanks

    atm in ferry terminal

Ferry terminal at Muara, Brunei, is very basic. I was there a couple of years ago and there was not an ATM then. I think there are a couple in the Muara shops a couple of kilometres away.

    Brunei to Labuan

We are going to Brunei early Feb. (Orchard Garden hotel). Planning a ferry trip to Labuan for the day and possibly doing a half day tour while there. Any feedback on the hotel, ....the Labuan trip, and even Bandar Seri bagawan would be greatly appreciated.

    Brunei to Labuan

Orchid Garden quite a nice hotel. Bill Clinton stayed there...as per photos in foyer. Manager is an Aussie, so it has the best coffee in town (not much else to choose from). Day trip to Labuan can be quite interesting...but no need to stay there any longer.

Cheapest transport from airport to BSB

Could anyone give me some advise on the cheapest transport from and to the airport in BSB. We will be arriving around 5:30 in the evening on Thursday.

Cheapest transport from airport to BSB

BSB airport not set up well for transfers. Airport taxis can cost $20-$40 for relatively short trips. Bus stops are close by...but can be hard to find- but will take you in to town fofr $1 (not far). Where are you travelling to in BSB? If a hotel, get them to pick you up.

Where to book city tour and taxi cost from airport.

    Hi All,

We are in arriving in Brunei on Sunday (from the UK) for 2 day / 3 night stopover at the Empire hotel before transferring to Kota Kinabalu. I have a couple of questions I hope some of you can answer for us.

    1) We would like to do a tour of the city and water village. Would it be best to book this at the airport on arrival or does anyone have experience of booking such a tour at the Empire. How much should we expect to pay for two people?

    2) How much should we expect to pay for taxi transfer from the airport to the Empire hotel?

    3) Can anyone confirm that Singaporean dollars will be perfectly accepted by everyone (city shops, taxis, etc.) as for payment?

    Thanks

    Richard

Where to book city tour and taxi cost from airport.

    Hi Richard

Last went to Brunei in October 2004, so I expect things may have changed.

We were collected from the airport by a shuttle bus provided by the Empire Hotel. I%26#39;m sure it should be included for you as well. Perhaps you should check it.

As for tours, we just used the hotels free shuttle bus again to drop us off in the city and right behind the mosque is the waterway with steps leading down to the water. We stood there for about a minute and dozens of boats came speeding towards us for our business. I%26#39;m afraid I can%26#39;t remember the price, but negotiate. I%26#39;m sure this is much cheaper than booking at the hotel. We ended up giving our man extra money in the end!!!

Can%26#39;t help you with the Singpore dollars, can%26#39;t remember.

Where to book city tour and taxi cost from airport.

You can use Singapore dollars in Brunei without any problems.

For a city tour, as you exit the airport terminal there is adesk om the left where I booked a 1/2 day city tour which visit the main mosque, the royal regalia, Kampong Air water village and general points of interest around Bandar Seri Begawan.

    Sorry can%26#39;t remember the cost.

    Thanks Bigw,

I%26#39;ll take a look when we get there.

    Airport transfer for 8 people

We have 8 people needing to go from Brunei aiport to the Empire hotel-country club. What would be the cheapest way to go to and from the hotel. The hotel has quoted us 55.00 Brunei dollars each way. Does anyone know of a cheaper way?

    Airport transfer for 8 people

    Hi Suzyjoe,

I posted a similar query just after you.

We are actually flying out to Brunei tomorrow (only 12 hours to go!), and in the absence of any other info I was intending to just jump into a taxi at the airport after agreeing a price.

If you go to www.tourismbrunei.com/info/ground.html the stated taxi fare from the airport to the Empire is $25, and so I will insist on approx. this fare before setting off. I think the Empire%26#39;s price of $55 is a bit steep, considering you could just take two standard taxis for less.

We are traveling on to KK, and then touring round Sabah, and will be back in the UK towards the end of March. If you %26#39;re not traveling out for a few weeks I might be able to update you then (unless one of the local experts hasn%26#39;t beaten me to it!). I%26#39;ll check back on this thread when we get back.

    Cheers

    Rich

    Airport transfer for 8 people

Thanks Rich, we are leaving Sydney in three weeks, on Thursday 22 March, will you be back before then? Thanks for your help.

    Hi again,

We get back on early on Wed 21st, so it might be close call, especially with you over in Oz. I%26#39;ll try to post quickly when I get back, but I guess you%26#39;ll have probably made your decision by then regarding booking a taxi via the Empire.

One things sure though, either way we%26#39;ll be in for a treat stopping at the Empire; first stop, that lake sized swimming pool! (I guess I%26#39;m just experiencing a bit of holiday fever, having just made it through another damp grey winter in Manchester).

    Cheers, Rich

    Hi again suzy joe,

Currently in KK enjoying a the end of a fab holiday.

At Brunei airport there were no taxis; and taxis are very few and far between in general (therefore expensive). At tour stand outside the airport the price was $35, which was non negotiable. We waited for a taxi for a 5-10 minutes and in the end took the offer from the tour company.

Transfer from the Empire (which is amazing by the way!) back to the airport was also $35 by hotel saloon. This seems to be the price. If you fancy a tour of the city, book this at the airport, its $10 cheaper than booking at the Empire (with the same company).

I think that $50 is probably a good deal for you guys and you should take this one up.

I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did and try the sea food buffet in the Atrium restaurant is its avialable.

    Rizqun Hotel

Staying in Brune for just 2 nights in April. Want a really central hotel as I%26#39;ve read taxis and buses can be hard to find.

Very few reviews of Rizqun Hotel but those I%26#39;ve read say it%26#39;s more central then Centrepoint Hotel.

And does anyone know of a street map for the city which pinpoints locations for all hotels please?

I%26#39;ve managed to find 2 mini-maps, which only highlight the Sheraton and others. But I%26#39;ve been told Sheraton is a long way from centre of city.

    THANKS.

    Rizqun Hotel

MsHongKong ... Rizqun Hotel is just next second block to Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong commercial center. Same buidling owner, but Ridqun is newer.

Sheraton Utama is 1km walk to city center; but 5km to Gadong. So, it really depends where are the commercial areas U are referring ... city center (BSB), Gadong, Kiulap, Seri Complex, etc. each is roughly 3 - 5 km between each other.

Regret I do not know of a map existing for reference.

Probably U still need transport, private or taxi, to move around during the 3 days / 2 nights to fully experience your stay,

    Brunei is fabulous !!

  • 10 hours stay in BSB

Hi, i will be travelling with my mother in september to perth, with transit in BSB. Is the bus service good in BSB? Is it easy to get a bus from town to the airport and around the famous mosques %26amp; water village?

Would it be cheaper to get a tour around? And would they transport us back to the airport thereafter?

    Thank you.

    10 hours stay in BSB

The bus sevice in BSB is basically useless.. However as you exit the terminal there is atour desk which will help you with short tours to and from the airport.

    10 hours stay in BSB

may i know roughly how much is the tour cost? and do they have specific time for departure? tq

The local tour may not fit in neatly for your 10 hours ... as your connecting flight is likely early noon or at night. An alternative way is to have a friend who is willing to drive U around ... dropping U off for a few hours at your own leisure where U like. No place in BSB is more than 20 mins%26#39; drive from the airport.

    Hi,

Don%26#39;t know about the buses or tours, but you could also try taking a taxi to the food market on Jalan Sungei Kianggeh. Not sure what it would cost. We went and had some local food there and you can catch a water taxi from the canal nearby to take you around the kampung. The taxi driver offered one hour %26#39;round and round%26#39; for $20 and we knocked him down to $10, so he took us for only 45mins. Was pretty interesting.

Its only a short walk through the city area to the Omar Ali Saffudien mosque which we were lucky enough to enter, and you can even walk over into a kampung from there. Our water taxi took us to another mosque too but we didn%26#39;t try to go in, just admired it from outside.

Hi there is a tour desk in the transit lounge. They will arrange a tour for you depending upon what time you arrive. There are quite a few trips to choose from depending upon your available time.

You will need to get a visa on arrival and this will cost around $5 Br. If you can carry this with you to expedite things, however you can change money in the transit lounge or it is most likely the immigration counter will allow you to go to the money changer nearby. Make sure you have spoken with the tourist counter first in the transit counter as they will assist also.

Keep in mind also that checkin upon return now takes a fair bit longer as they are checking all carry on bags for liquids greater than 100ml. Best to leave all these in your checked bagged as with all knives and sharp instruments, and water bottles etc.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Roger

I was in BSB in May 06 for about 12 hours. I found the bus service into town to be fine - had to wait maybe 20minutes for the bus. The bus stop is just a few minutes walk from the terminal. Once in town, I went to the main tourist office who arranged a tour. While at the tourist office there was another group who had a shorter stopover and the tourist office were able to arrange a shorter tour for them (dropping them back at the airport). I got the tour guide to drop me at a large shopping mall and then took a taxi back to the airport with no problem.

Once in town it is quite easy to walk around to see the mosque and get to the water village. There were plenty of people on the waterfront offering a tour of the water village. Though as i remember, the larger mosque is not in the centre as our tour guide drove us to the mosque and to outside the sultans residence.

    living in Brunei

my family and i will be relocating to brunei come this July. We will be bringing our 2 gilrs, a 5 yr old and a baby. any ideas on where we could rent a serviced apartment with a pool, somewhere in Jerudong? or somewhere near the theme park/university of brunei?

    living in Brunei

We recently finished a two-year stint in Brunei. Unfortunately, the idea of serviced apartments has not really taken off there. The university is a little remote from everything and the once-grand theme park is now virtually a ghost town. There are quite a few complexes of (excessively) large houses, grouped around a pool or common area -- but these are often rented by organisations en masse and can be a little claustrophic. One central serviced apartment is D%26#39;Anggerek Apartments. There is a cafe that serves good food. You could take a suit3e there for a month or so while you checked permanent housing out. Check their internet site www.danggerek.com and you can get much lower rates than they advertise online if you asked directly for long-term. A final choice may depend at which school your girl attends (probably JIS or ISB).

Accommodation(Seria) and distance between Seria and BSB

I plan to have a short trip to Brunei and my target destination will be Seria.

    I wish to know that:

a). is there any accommodation available at Seria?

b). what is the distance between Bandar Seri Bagawan and Seria?

c). is it easy access within these 2 places? because I may need go to Seria everyday for my 4D3N or 5D4N trip

d). what%26#39;s the guide in Seria? I mean any recommendation on places to go or food maybe? It%26#39;s hard to find much information about Seria online.

    Thanks for your kind reply

Accommodation(Seria) and distance between Seria and BSB

There is a perfectly acceptable Chinese-run hotel across from the bus station. At $B55 (single), it is much cheaper than Kuala Beleit or B.S.B.

It is only about 100 K to B.S.B., but travel on public bus takes 2 hours or more. A taxi or private car would take half that by using the expressway, which the bus does not. The last bus to B.S.B. leaves Seria (and v.v.) @ 4 PM.

Seria is an oil town. Everything you need in basic services is here, but not much more. Plenty of stores and places to eat, but nothing much geared for the leisure traveler.

Hello Calven- I have been to Seria several times on business and plan to go there again next week. I usually stay at the Sheraton in Bandar Seri but kind of far to go back and forth everyday. I hear Centrepoint in Bandar Seri is much better but, like I said, far to drive and the highway is only one lane each direction in some places.

On my trip next I also plan to stay in Kuala Beleit and I was told the Sentosa hotel is quite nice. I found a link to other hotels in the area if you are interested. Seems like the Riviera is also convenient and not too bad. Good luck.

    distance to town

We will be arriving by cruiseship in Bandar Seri Begawan and are wondering if it is possible to walk into town or do we need a taxi? Thanks!

    distance to town

I reckon, it is not possible to walk some 15km into town from cruiseship berth; however, I%26#39;m sure the cruise operator would have arranged several local tours for that few hours. Not sure if taxi is available from berth area. Enjoy U short stay.

    distance to town

Thank you leejames33. I will find out from the cruiseline if they have any tours available for their passengers.

I assume the ship will berth at Muara Port, which is quite some distance from the centre of town. There are usually some taxis available in that area (or at least nearby where the Labuan ferries depart from) - but I would assume you may get a tour. Unfortunately, Brunei is not all that geared up to either tourists or public transport.

    Terrace Hotel Brunei

This is the worst hotel we have ever seen , we were booked in for a 3 night stay in june and found it so disgusting we put our bags down, looked at the awful state of the room and walked out. The smell of damp and stale sweat was obvious. We would not advise any one to stay there. Mike and Val U.K. June 2007.

  • Kota Kinabalu - Brunei - on the way to KK with young kids

    Hi

We%26#39;re planning to go to Kota Kinabalu in February with our children (aged 8, 4 and 4). Our plane lands in Brunei and there%26#39;s 7 hours till our connecting flight so I thought I%26#39;d stay over for a few days in Brunei.

I%26#39;ve looked at the Empire Hotel but it%26#39;s out of my budget and someone has suggested the Centrepoint?

I need a hotel with a pool and close to some kiddie stuff (water play/beach, playground, zoo, horseriding, etc.)

Otherwise, is there anything for us to do for the 7 hours whilst we wait although I%26#39;m nervous about this as the kids will be shattered after the long flight from the UK!

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance

    hi,

you can take the kids to Jerudong Park. it is a huge theme park with roller coasters etc..... and best of all its free!!!!! there is a huge variety for all ages.

google Jerudong Park and have a look. it is in Brunei Darussalam.

    have fun

Kota Kinabalu - Brunei - on the way to KK with young kids

    Hi,

We stayed in the Centrepoint for a couple of nights when we first arrived in Brunei. It%26#39;s ok, is in a good location for shopping and some fantastic restaurants. Not much for the kids though! The Empire would be your best bet, as they are run more like a resort, with more pools etc. Be warned though - watch your kids at the pool as there are no life guards!

The Centrepoint is in a good location for doing Bandar Seri Begawan (about 15 mins drive away) where you can visit Kampong Ayer (the water village), and you can also travel a bit fruther down the river to see the Proboscus monkeys (just past the back of the Sultan%26#39;s Palace!). There are also some pretty good museums in Bandar (all free!) - would recommend the Malay Technology museum, which tells you all about longhouses, and the Royal Regalia museum, which is all about the Sultan.

Jerudong Park is nice to walk round, but the rides there have recently been dismantled and sold off, as it%26#39;s cheaper to replace them than to repair them, so as far as i%26#39;m aware there aren%26#39;t any rides there.

The beaches are nice, but as we%26#39;re in a Muslim country, we would advise against bikinis. You can wear bikinis at the Empire though.

The climate in Brunei is very hot and very humid, so you probably don%26#39;t want to be rushing around too much, and not much opens before 10 am. It%26#39;s not called the Abode of Peace for nothing!

If you want to know anything else, let me know.

    Hi,

We spent 3 weeks touring around Brunei and Borneo in March. We spent some time in Brunei and then based ourselves in KK stopping alternatively at the Rasa Ria and STAR before / after 7 days wildlife tour through Sabah.

It is certainly feasible to take in Sepilok, Turtle Island and Brunei in 10 days; it just depends on how much RR (if any) you would like. After much searching we booked our tours through a Malaysian tour operator (Marimari), which were very prompt and professional. However I believe you can go directly to tour operator http://www.wildlife-expeditions.com/ for a cheaper price. Marimari at least seemed quite flexible and willing to put together an itinerary to suit our needs. Sepilok-Turtle Island could be done as a 3D2N package with return flights to Sandakan.

Please note that turtles (at least green) come all year to Turtle Island. When we were there in March, 15 turtles landed that evening! We were lucky, but the numbers did not seem unusual for that time of year. Of course these things can not be guaranteed, and you might be in for a wait. If the numbers on the Island exceed approx 30, then they split the group into two viewings of different turtles. If you are unlucky, you could be up very, very late so make sure you have a pack of cards or other entertainment. Sepilok is amazing, and will be great fun for your children too. We loved the jungle tours on and around the Kinabatangan River, but they are not particularly suitable for most children. Mt Kinabalu Park is also very interesting for wildlife but more child friendly.

Really, there is nothing much worth seeing in KK and the Sunday market isn%26#39;t very good. Instead spend your time on the Islands opposite and take your snorkelling gear if you have some. The STAR was much cheaper than the Rasa Ria on all fronts. In fact the Rasa Ria is expensive by any standards (especially for alcohol), but you can view Orang-utans at the Rasa Ria (not a patch on Sepilok though, more of a tourist attraction). Both Rasa Ria and STAR are very good hotels, both have good and bad points, which we found were endlessly argued over in KK forum. Personally I preferred the STAR. If you like a drink, then take advantage of the happy hours, or take some duty free. Alternatively we got a very good price (£3pppn) on the Horizon club at the STAR; free buffet and alcoholic drinks from 5-7pm! Children are frowned upon in the club though, so double check with the hotel first before booking the club.

For Brunei, you shouldn%26#39;t need more than 2 days unless you would like to journey into the rainforest. If your budget can stretch to it, then the Empire hotel is truly amazing and you will (probably) never stop in such opulence again!! We had the pools to ourselves most days. Some pools are shaded and all are child friendly (with supervision). Arrange pick-up drop-off via the hotel of your choice, and a one day tour including water village can be arrange upon arrival or through operator above.

I can provide some pictures of any of the hotels or places you plan to visit should you wish. Either way you will be in for a fabulous holiday.

    Hope the above helps out.

    Spambo,

I just noticed you other post regarding the price for the Empire. We originally stopped over in Brunei because we were on a cheap Royal Brunei flight to KK (I suspect similar to you).

I checked the cost for the Empire, and we paid £98/room/night. We got this rate via airline network (packaged in with flights). I believe you can get the empire slightly cheaper still via marimari or also try pinganchorage, but we preferred to keep flights and hotels with UK operator (one company) and tour with marimari.

I also forgot to mention, Feb/March is the best time to cruise the Kinabatangan River. Since it is toward the end of the dry season the rivers and tributaries are much reduced, and so do not flood into the surrounding forest. This attracts lots of monkeys and wildlife to the rivers edge at dawn/dusk for easy and reliable viewing from the spotting boats. We actually saw gibbons, which were told was very, very unusual for the Kinabatangan (in fact the local river guide had not seen one any in that area for over a year).

    Regards

    Richard,

Your information was extremely helpful. With the Rasa Ria, do you think it is worth spending the extra MSR250 per night (AUD90) to get buffet dinner for 2A and 2C included along with free non-motorised sports and free laundry? Or is it wise to just pay as you go?

Also how did you get from Brunei to KK? We are flying in from KL to KK via Air Asia but they don%26#39;t seem to have flights from Brunei to KK.

    Lisa

    Hi Lisa,

    I think there were three restaurants as follows at RR;

    - An expensive and plush restaurants (international fine cuisine) where people went to have a nice romantic meal, price was circa £20-30pp + drinks. As mentioned above, wine is very expensive, especially for you guys from oz (£15 / bottle for an average to half decent bottle)

    - An ethnic open air restaurant where you can sample small amount of traditional foods (Malay, Indian, Asian, etc). The food set up is a central eating area surrounded by individual stalls where each prepares different cuisines to order. The food was very good here and very more-ish! From what I can remember, the price for a buffet was in the region £15pp (90MR) + drinks.

    - A standard buffet restaurant serving all type of foods (there are theme nights also - e.g. bbq sea food); basically this is a standard hotel buffet, nothing special. Price was again in the region of £12-15pp. This will be where you can eat the inclusive buffet dinner.

The price you are quoted seems quite fair for inclusive food; but it kind of depends what type of food you would be looking to eat. We preferred the ethnic foods, but this is our personal travel style.

By Malaysian standards the prices are very expensive and are actually comparable to UK prices; but it is not really possible / practical to eat out of the resort for most people. Also look out for the happy hours at the bars (different times at different bars) for two4one offers on cocktails. We found the STAR much better value for money because they could not charge so much because it was closer to KK where the food is very much cheaper than at either Shangri La. Still the Rasa Ria has a good beach, better rooms and a much nicer, more relaxed ambiance. Both hotels are very nice indeed (It’s like splitting hairs), they just appeal to different styles of holiday and you will enjoy a comfortable stay at either hotel.

Entry to see the Orang-utans was 50MR for hotel patrons.

Flights from KK to Brunei can be taken via Royal Brunei airways. Our flights from the UK included free stopovers in Brunei, but I think the flights from KK are in the order of £30-40.

I’ll post you some photos of Rasa Ria .

    This info is great.

We have booked 2 nights in Brunei (not confirmed accommodation yet but would love to stay at the Empire).

7 nights at Rasa Ria because of the sanctuary - my twins are only 4 and I thought Sandakan may be a bit too old for them

7 nights at the Tanjung Aru because of the kids club and proximity to the airport.

I am hoping to take my eldest (she%26#39;ll be 8) on some kind of adventure, I%26#39;d like to show her how people live so perhaps a visit to a local village (or long houses?), Turtle Island, perhaps Sandakan.

She%26#39;s also been reading about Borneo%26#39;s indigenous pygmy elephants but I can%26#39;t find anything about seeing them anywhere.

The twins will stay at the hotel with their Grandma whilst we do an overnight trip.

My husband is also an avid diver so I%26#39;d like to book him some dive packages (the actual trip is his 40th birthday present) and a white water rafting experience. Did you experience any?

It would be great to hear all your tales and advice - my email address is sharon.bentley@o2.com

PS what were the Royal Brunei flights like?

    Hi,

I%26#39;m a Brit living in Brunei. Myself and my husband have been to Sabah 3 times, and have loved it more and more every time. We spent New Year 2005 in Sandakan and down the Kinabatangan River. We saw the Borneo Pygmy Elephants at 6.30am New Years Eve at the back of our lodge (2 adults and 2 babies). We also saw them in Danum Valley in Feb this year, but we had to go looking for them that time. The surrounding forest wasn%26#39;t flooded at all in Kinabatabgan. I cannot begin to tell you what wildlife we saw. Female Orangutan and baby nesting for the night, crocodiles, so many birds. Would thoroughly recommend a stay there.

We also visited Sepilok and Sandakan. We haven%26#39;t done the turtles, so can%26#39;t advise on that.

We stayed at Tanjung Aru on our first trip to KK - fantastic resort, would recommend. The next two times we stayed at the Shangri-La in the centre of KK - very reasonable, clean and comfortable. Ideal location for KK centre.

If you have any questions about Sabah let me know, and i%26#39;ll do my best for you.

    Lesley

    Hi Lesley

Where did you stay in Sandakan and did you do a prearranged tour or did you just book the tours when you got there?

It is going to cost us roughly $1600 Australian Dollars for 3 nights for 3 Adults and 2 Children. Does this sound reasonable to you?

    Regards
