2 night stopover - lone female traveller

I have a 2 night stop over in Brunei on my way to Australia in December.

I am a little concerned about getting hassled as a female traveller on my own. Has anyone ever experienced any problems with this?

I really wouldn%26#39;t worry about it at all.

Bruneians are some of the politest people I have ever met - I%26#39;ve been 4 times in the last 24 months, and each time I%26#39;ve been there, females from overseas have been in the hotel, walking around sightseeing in Bandar Seri Begawan (the capital) etc.

The only real advice I would make (and I see this a lot in the Middle East and Islamic SE Asian countries) - please dress appropriately - these are conservative countries, particularly with regards to dress - both for men and particularly women. I%26#39;m not suggesting hiding bodies completely but if you keep shoulders and legs covered, it would be appreciated by Bruneians!

Have a good stopover

I am female and live here. Its your wobbly bits you shoud cover. No strappy t-shirts, or mini skirts. You wouldnt get hassled anyway even if you wore this, but you may get bad service.Just wear a t,shirt and 3 quarter pants,as its humid and your thighs can stick together in a skirt.

The men here are overall polite and even a bit shy.By dressing, this way you will blend.Great shoe shopping if you have small feet too!!!

I spent a couple of days in BSB a few months ago and agree with the above comments, the locals are among the friendliest I%26#39;ve met anywhere in the world.

I%26#39;m female and although I was travelling with my boyfriend I did have cause to wander about on my own and had absolutely no hassle at all.

I was even charged the same prices as locals in the fruit market, I was amazed!

Make sure you hire a water taxi for a tour around the water village and get him to drop you off at one end and pick you up at the other. We wandered around and the people were just unbelievably friendly.

I have small feet- any particular place best to shop for shoes.

Are the prices fixed or do you need to barter?

Any other shopping hints would be appreciated.

Thanks

In brunei, u dont need to barter, because:

1. ppl dont charge u more than they have to (well, generally)

2. bartering is generally frowned upon (as far as i know)

also plenty of bruneians have small feet as well, so u%26#39;ll have no problems finding the right size ;)

its good to learn the local lingo when doing transactions, like ';berapa ni?'; meaning ';how much is this?'; and ';terima kasih'; which means ';thank you!';

although u probably wont understand the replies it doesn hurt to endear urself to the locals; who knows they might hand u a fat discount if u ask for it ;)

Hi,

It is quite safe to travel around in town during the day or early night. People seems to be very friendly. And I agree with all the previous post, make sure you dress appropriately to avoid starry eye.... Anyway, may I know where about are you going to stay as the night life is not that great at night and transportation might be expensive and difficult.
