shopping in brunei

This is my first trip advisor posting so hope this is correct - we will be overnighting in Brunei en-route to Kota Kinabalu and wondered if there is any special shopping to be done there - always on the lookout for special mementos of a visit to different countries - or is there anything that is especially well priced in Brunei - many thanks

shopping in brunei

I had two nights in Brunei in early March and because my suitcase went astray I had the joy of having to do some shopping.

Prices are not much different to Australia and there was not anything very different. The main shopping centre in Bandar Seri Begawan is just like any mall in Aust. Other shopping is not much different.

Spend your money on a half day city tour, book at the Airport on arrival, for some ';interesting experiences';. Save your shopping money for Kota Kinabalu where there is a much wider choice and better prices.

If you want a drink in Brunei don%26#39;t forget to take it with you, it is dry country. You have to fill out forms on entry and declare any alcohol. Don%26#39;t forget to have $15 Brunei or Singapore (I think that is the amount) to pay for your transit visa at the Airport on arrival. I didn%26#39;t have it and had to run around changing currency before they would let me in.

You are able to get the local made sourvenir from The Arts %26amp; Handicraft Centre, Crystal factory, souvenir and weaving shop.

More information can be obtained at the service counter outside the airport arrival hall.

Enjoy your stay in Brunei.

Have to disagree with Big w.There are many bargains to be had here.Copy dvds and watches to name a few and copy handbags.Just ask locals which shops to go to they are all helpful, and most speak english, but may be a little shy.Scarfs too abound and they make a great light gift.Shoes are to die for and very cheap too...as long as you have small feet.Clothes are only soso and tend to be cheap and very poorly made.Only buy dvd 9 quality dvds and get the shop to play it all the way thru on fast forward...many are scratched and damaged.

Eating out is good.Good luck.

From what I know things are cheap in Brunei unless you don%26#39;t know where to buy it. There is a night eatery in Bandar next to a blue church. The cost of food in that area is BND30 for 8 people. for the same amount of food will cost me RM200 in Kg Baru Kuala Lumpur. As I have said. Things are cheap in Brunei only if you know where to find them.

Recommended hotels are Centrepoint hotel BND138 for a suite, Empire hotel (only for the rich) and D%26#39;anggerik for a cheap 4 star hotel BND72 per night.

hehehe... if u leave here in the phils... you will find it expensive.. most goods in brunei are also made in china.. like here in the phils... triple the price here in the phils.... but its good to go around... you might find big discounts or items on big sale...
