Royal Brunei AL--Cancellations??

The direct flight from Brunei to SGN is only scheduled 3 days a week. Does anyone have any experience with this airline? I am worried about my flight getting cancelled and being stuck in Brunei for several days.

Thanks.

Jane

Royal Brunei AL--Cancellations??

I%26#39;ve flown using Royal Brunei Airlines more than a dozen of times and have never experienced any cancelled flights.. Delayed flights (which are so seldom anyway) for a couple of hours, yes, I%26#39;ve heard of them, but never for a few days. So, yeah, I can safely say that their schedule%26#39;s reliable.

Besides, RBA is based in Brunei, so I would assume that if anything happened, they%26#39;d probably provide an alternative carrier.

Hope that the explanation%26#39;s reassuring for you.

Royal Brunei AL--Cancellations??

I had forgotten about this being the base for the airline. You are right that an alternative should be provided if problems arise. That IS reassuring. Thanks, Zury.

Royal Brunei Air is getting progressively worse with its regular cancellations and long delays in recent times, as it has downgraded its fleet. We have had more problems with them than any other airline in the world, with delays and cancellations. Sometimes they combine two half-full flights, even if many hours apart. You will get to Singapore, but don%26#39;t bet on a tight time line. Fortunately, Singapore Airlines flies to Brunei most days - and with Air Asia flying to KL there is now another option too.

Thanks GWP for that additional information. I think I%26#39;ll fly Air Asia via KL even if I %26#39;ll need to spend the night in KL.

Our Stop-over in Brunei

May 2008

Only had 24 hours in Brunei and stayed at the Sheraton Utama - found it was very comfortable and good location. Walked from the Sheraton into the city (not far) and down to the waterfront. No sooner arrived at the water%26#39;s edge and an open boat pulled up in front of us and driver tried to get us to go on a tour with him to see the Water Village and the Probiscus Monkeys. He gave us the option of just doing one or the other as well. Anyway, we had limited time and thought %26#39;what the heck!%26#39;. Negotiated a total price of BI$50 (2 passengers). Had only taken Singapore dollars into Brunei and the boat driver (private resident of Brunei) accepted them no problems.

He gave us a very informative trip through the Water Village and took us up river to see the Probiscus Monkeys (only about 20 mins up the river). Saw Monkeys and were very happy. The driver spoke fairly good English and was very nice and very friendly and very helpful. We were on the water for about one and a half hours in total. It was lovely and cool while the boat was travelling along, so overall was a very pleasant trip and we were more than happy with the price. We may have got %26#39;ripped off%26#39; with the price - don%26#39;t know how much we should have paid, just know that it was a lot cheaper doing it that way than going on an organised group tour. As we only had limited time we saw everything that a group tour would see in half the time. The driver dropped us back at some markets that were not far from our hotel (mainly food stalls). Suggest wearing long sleeve shirt and take a hat. You will need sunscreen on your face especially, as the boat is open and even though it%26#39;s cool travelling along, we did get a little sunburnt on our face

Our Stop-over in Brunei

Thanks! We%26#39;ll be in Brunei for a few days in October and your report is helpful.

Driving from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu

Hi we are looking for adventure and it sounds like the trip from Brunei to Kota is what we want. To those who know could you please let me know where we can hire a 4wd in Bandar to go to Kota and if they let you drop them off in Kota as we plan to fly on from there? My email address is mikemizzi@hotmail.com if you want to answer direct rather then via this post. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks mike

Driving from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu

    G%26#39;day Mike !

The short answer is a NO. However, all is not lost, might suggest you FERRY to Labuan Island, a trip of some 2 hours from Bandar. Labuan is a wealthy duty free Island off the Borneo Coast. It is home to a number of leading banks and oil companies. There%26#39;s a Sheraton and a lovely Yacht Club there as well a Lions and Rotary Club.

Labuan Island was rather important to Australia during WW2 as the landing spot for the eventual liberation of Borneo by the Allies from the then Japanese Imperial Army.

From Labuan you can ferry to Kota Kinabalu on a 6 hour trip. It%26#39;s a lovely coast line and a trip well worth taking. If you%26#39;re in Bandar or KK anytime from Mid December to mid January, please feel free to contact me via this forum.

Excellent budget hotel if you want your money worth

I%26#39;m sorry, but I can%26#39;t see the name of this hotel! Can you please advise?

    KH Soon Resthouse

I can%26#39;t find out how to book for this place or any extra info on it at all..can anyone help

    KH Soon Resthouse

    K H Soon Resthouse%26#39;s website is http://khsoon-resthouse.tripod.com/

I recommend that you email them via Email: khsoon_resthouse_brunei@hotmail.com or contact them via phone : +673 2222052

Its a nice and comfortable place to stay in and very convenient as it is situated smack in the middle of the city centre. About 5 mins walk from the Resthouse is the Bus and Taxi terminal. There%26#39;s the purple taxi that you can catch which charges only S$3.00(approx. US$1.80) for anywhere within a 3 km radius, after that, they%26#39;ll start the meter. You can check with the Resthouse in more detail about where to go and how.

    3 hours in BSB

I have a 3 hour layover in Bandar Seri Begawan, is there anything that can be seen in town in that time? How far is the airport from town? What options for transportation are there? Any insights on BSB and its airport/surrounding area will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    3 hours in BSB

with 3 hours in transit, you%26#39;ll get to see the airport....lol. bring a good book.

seriously, you can get a 72 hour visa for B$1. you need to pay for this in brunei or singapore dollars. the queue could be long and might take up to 1 hour. the airport is 8 km from the city. cab fare is around B$20 one way. best bet is to negotiate with the cab driver to take you around for 2 hours at a set rate. do not bother with a bus...it might never come! remember to factor in the check in time.

  • Stop over in Brunei

Hi, do you think that we would have time to catch a taxi and see some of the sights when we stop in Brunei for 7 hours. Is it safe and do you have any idea of how much it may cost to see the sights in a taxi. Thanks for your help

    Brunei Stopover

Hi we are spending four days in Brunei beginning of April 2006 hopefully staying at The Empire and would like any tips/ideas for must do trips etc. We like animals but would guess its too far to visit the Orang utans but what about probiscus monkeys?

Any ideas on what vaccinations are needed

    Brunei Stopover

I highly recommend you to take a tour to Ulu Temburong National Park. Suggested tour opeerators are Sunshine Borneo Tours and Freme Travel. Included in the tour is a 45 mins boat ride to Bangar, where there are high chances of spotting proboscis monkeys and crocodiles in their natural habitat (mangrove swamp). The canopy walkway available there may not be as long as those in Malaysia but provide significant view of the canopy, especially during early morning.

If you wish to visit the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, be reminded that taxis are rather scarce in Brunei. There is no railway in Brunei and the bus service is inefficient.

A visit to the water village (Venice of the East) is a must. I also recommend the Royal Regalia and the SOAS mosque, which both are located in the city centre.

Please be noted that nightlife does not exist in Brunei as Brunei is a rather strict Islamic country

    Brunei Stopover

The Empire Hotel and Country Club is a very good hotel but is quite far away from everything else. It is after all a resort.

Try The Centrepoint in Gadong as it is in the heart of one of Brunei%26#39;s busiest areas. Staying there, you will get to see many of the locals and their lifestyle.

    Cross over a tiny bridge to visit Gadong%26#39;s Night Market. Pick up a few phrases such as %26#39;Brapa ni?%26#39; pronounced %26#39;brupper knee%26#39; which means %26#39;How much is this?%26#39;. BND$1 = SGD$1. To say %26#39;thank you%26#39; in Brunei is %26#39;ma kasih%26#39; pronounced %26#39;ma ca-sea-h%26#39;

Perhaps the next day you could take a short taxi ride to the capital where you will see a more aged side of Brunei. There%26#39;s the Kampong Ayer, as previously suggested and the markets along the Brunei River. 10 mins away from the capital is the Brunei National Museum and Brunei Tenchnological Museum which is a good way to see Brunei%26#39;s culture.

Ask the previously suggested tour operators if they could take you to Tasek Merimbun (Merimbun Lake) in Tutong, about 30-40 mins away from The Empire Hotel or how about a bit of hiking at Bukit Shahbandar (Book-it Shah-bun-dar)?

Please be adventurous and try the local cuisines in restaurants such as Aneka Rasa or Mamih Restaurant in Qiulap (Key-you-lupp).

If your looking for local handicrafts I would suggest the small arcade shop (2nd level) found in The Mall at Gadong, a block away from Centrepoint Hotel. Its called Ridah Enterprise.

Hmm I tghink some of these posters mqy hav a biz here..I dont!I am an expat here.Do stay at the empire. They have a shuttle bus that can take you around for free, the hotel is amazing and over the top, well worth staying there. Its also near a bizarre fun park called Jerudong park. While many rides ar not open anymore, its an amazing place to visit. Its open after 5. Golf is cheap as chips, play either at the empire or the Jerudong park course, but early as it gets got.

Food here is good and you wont get sick.Escapade sushi in gadong is good and cheap,or try the popular for indian...or any other indian all good.Fratinis is an italian restarant in town which overlloks the river and village,go there for dinner before sunset.6 ish.You can see the monkeys and can book one of the boat men for around 50 to see the proboscis monkeys.Go in the morning is better when there is a low tide and you may see otters and gators too.

Bring beer and wine with you,for you own private consumption. The empire allow you to drink it at the hotel.2 wines and 2 doz beer.

you dont need any vacination at all.I have 2 kid here and we have never been sick apart from a cold.

Where to start? Where to go? What to do?!

I%26#39;m planning on taking 3 to 4 weeks off work for a trip to Brunei (to catch up with family there for about 5 days).

Am viewing this as an opportunity to explore further afield. Would like to experience the best of what that part of the world can offer (within that time frame anyway!) Also after a bit of rest of relaxation (on some deserted beach somewhere!) Not looking for super-luxururious places to stay - just soewhere comfortable and safe.m

Not sure if I should simply focus on visiting Malaysia or whether I should try to incorporate a visit to Thailand or anywhere else for that matter!

Would be REALLY grateful for any suggestions or recommendations!

Where to start? Where to go? What to do?!

    Warm Greetings from Brunei Darussalam!

    Hi,

If you are an active and adventurous person, you could try Jet Skiing in Serasa Beach. You could also visit Labi for that matter, The Iban Long House, and trekking to Wasai Wong Kadir in which a Cool Waterfall can be found. There you could have a family picnic and if you are lucky you could even stop for Hua Ho oranges picking on your way to labi. If you decided to take the above trip please call 6732234280 Freme Tour operators Mr sugu or you could email them at sugu@freme.com

Hoped you enjoy your trip to Brunei.

Where to start? Where to go? What to do?!

Well,I am an expat living here and I wouldnt reccomend any of those things!

I would do temburong canopy walk,a full day and you need to be fond of stairs! Its a ferry trip from town(7brunei) to temburong, then a bus to the park, then a skinny wooden boat trip up some gentle rapids...o not so gentle but very safe, then a walk through lovely national park...up lots of steps, until you get to the canopy walk....and walk through the tree tops. You need freme to orgainise the boat and bus.The ferry you can catch your self, day should cost you 45 if you orgainse 6 people.Otherswise it can cost 136!

You can also organise a water taxi in town to take you down the river(past sultans palace) to see the proboscis monkeys,go early at low tide if possible and then you may see otters and the odd croc too.Have lunch at portview italian restarnt after wards or coffee great view and nice.Jerudong park is worth a visit(5 b) opens at 5,a theme park .....pretty amazing, lots of rides dont work but enough do to make it worthwhile, and go to the laser water show, also in the park at 8,9 and 10.Worth the 5 just for that!!!Golf is cheap here and excellent.Best is the course in Jerudong park 25 for a round plus buggy.Gadong markets might be interesting for you...mixed market behind next to main mall. You could do a trip to Kota kinabulu and see the mountain there, great snorkelling there and diving at islands 10 mins from most main hotels.I would reccomend Sutra harbour hotel..view pools(old part is cheaper and I like it better but you may like the newer part of the hotel as has asian rooms.)Worth a visit to see the mosques and deff walk around the water village or catch a water taxi(10) for a trip around it.Have a t least one meal at the Empire Hotel...do the lunch in the atrium(33) ot pantai grill fri and Sat (44)If you do the lunch get there early before';greedy'; people!!!

Jerudong pantai markets(fish and veges) very local but fascinating get there at 5.All sorts of amazing fish.............and fruit...............even saw a croc there once for sale!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope that helps!!!!Trust me these are all GREAT tips.

    Hi,

For a 12 Hour stop in Brunei Darussalam you could fill in your time with the following activities:

1). Sightseeing in BSB around Water Village/Jame Asr%26#39; Mosque

    2). Shopping at Gadong Town

If you%26#39;re not up to sightseeing, you could always go to Brunei shopping mall in Gadong, or Qlap area. Since, Brunei are tax free you could find electrical stuff and food very cheap. However, since you only have 12 hours stop renting a car could be expensive and wasting. Try to contact a taxi from the airport and make early arrangements so you could go places to fill in your time here.

I stayed at the Brunei Hotel for two nights last March.

It is a 3 star hotel and overall I was not impressed.

I suppose it mets 3 star requirements but the restaurant is not very good, food is average including breakfast.. The room I had was average with little but the basics provided. But It was cheap. I suppose you get what you pay for.

I felt that the staff were not very helpful and their command of english was not great.

However, it is very central and handy to most of the facilities, markets and shopping in Bandar Seri Begawan. There are a couple of reasonable coffee shops and cafes one block away.

If I went back to Brunei, which is doubtful, I think I would find a better place to stay.

    Hi Bagel!

By chance are you on the Oceania Nautica? We seems to be following each other around in forums and perhaps can share information. ;-)

    Bagel,

Thinking about going on 2/07 trip. Can you tell me if you enjoyed your cruise on the Nautica? How were the ports, weather and the ship?

Thanks for any info you can provide.
